Living in Manhattan can be wonderful for many reasons, but one of the most shocking things that many people find when living or working here is that there is an exorbitant amount of dust. Much of it is a direct result of the New York air pollution. Because of this dust problem, one of the top luxury cleaning questions we are often asked is, “How often should I clean my rugs?” We’ve put together some basic information to help you decide.
Consider the Dust
First, the dust is a big factor. Do you notice dust gathering in other areas of your home or office, such as on hardwood floors, shelves or other surfaces? If so, your rugs are gathering dust too, even if you can’t see it. However, if you have a newer HVAC unit and change the filter regularly, dust may be less of an issue for you.
Think About Other Issues
Those with pets will need to clean the rugs more often due to fur and other potential pet messes. In addition, rugs that are in heavy traffic areas need more attention than those in a sitting room that is seldom used. Finally, think about how a less-than-clean rug affects your life. For example, those who have kids playing on the floor may be more meticulous about regular cleaning than those who do not.
So, How Often Should a Rug Be Cleaned?
Most experts recommend that rugs should be professionally cleaned annually–at least. If you have pets or other concerns, twice yearly may be best. In between cleanings, a good vacuuming, spot removing and occasional “beating” to remove dust is a good way to keep your rugs looking their best.
If it’s been a while since you’ve had your rugs thoroughly cleaned, now may be the time to talk to a professional and put it on your cleaning schedule–this is a simple way to keep your Manhattan home or business looking and feeling its best.
