After-holiday cleaning tips for your home

Between house guests, kids on school breaks, and lots of food, your house can become a nightmare after the holidays. Try these cleaning tips and start the year on a sparkling clean foot.
1) Store holiday decorations properly
The holidays are over and now its time to it’s time to put away all the decorations. However, to avoid opening a tangled mess of half-broken lights it is best to store them properly. The best thing to do is to first clean each item and then store them in plastic bags, boxes, or bins that are marked. This will help you find the decorations much easier next year as well as keep them safe from dust, mold, and breakage.
2) Throw away old decorations
It might be tempting to take everything and just throw it in a box in storage. But now is the time to take an inventory of what decorations you’d like to keep and what you’d like to throw away. Sort through things like holiday cards, old Santa hats, lights, etc.
3) Cleaning through all those gifts
You probably have lots of gifts lying around and you need to find places for each of them. Go through and assess the gifts you’ll use. Consider donating some of those gifts that don’t really match your style (and perhaps you’ll never use them). If you have lots of great gifts you want to keep, but no room for them, take stock of what you do own and consider giving away your older items that are worn out or haven’t been used in years.
4) Clean up after guests
It’s a good idea to disinfect and clean the house and guest rooms after the holidays. Remember that the flu and colds like to appear around this time of year, so after the holidays, it’s important to clean the areas where guests and friends have been. This begins by wiping surfaces, washing towels, and linens, vacuuming carpets and floors, etc.
5) Store all the food
Clean out any old holiday food that has already gone bad or that you don’t plan on eating. Take the opportunity to give your fridge a good cleaning as well! Old food can smell bad and make people sick so avoid leaving it on the fridge for long periods of time.
6) Hire a cleaning company
There are some things that are better left in the hands of a professional cleaning company. The holidays can leave a house pretty dirty, therefore it is best to give that job to a team of professionals with the right equipment and expertise.
