How to Clean and Protect Different Materials: Marble, Porcelain, Crystal, and Precious Metals

A beautiful place to live and work is one of life’s greatest luxuries. If you love the luxury lifestyle and have high end interiors for your home or office, you have probably figured out that delicate materials require specialized cleaning procedures. While hiring someone to help you with the big tasks, such as chandelier cleaning services is always a good option, sometimes you may want to “do it yourself.” We’ve gathered basic cleaning info for a few different materials you may want to make sparkle and shine.

  • Marble – The marble institute recommends dusting (or dry mopping) marble frequently. When you need a deeper clean, using a mild dishwashing detergent, warm water, and a non-abrasive sponge is the best method to keep this surface looking clean. Most importantly, keep acidic materials away from marble or wash it off if they come into contact with this material.
  • Porcelain – Basic cleaning of porcelain is easy. Just wipe with water and perhaps a bit of gentle dish soap. If you have deep stains you want something stronger. A mixture of baking soda and ammonia is a good choice. Rinse thoroughly afterwards to avoid having a white film left behind. There are also specialty products for porcelain items–like stoves, for instance.
  • Crystal – Even though it may sound easy, you don’t want to put fine crystal into the dishwasher! Vinegar mixed with water is the best way to clean crystal. You’ll want to make sure to dry the pieces with a soft, lint-free cloth when you are finished to avoid streaking or spotting.
  • Precious Metals – While there are many cleaners on the market that can help you clean your gold, silver, and platinum, for the most part they are not necessary. Mix a few drops of ammonia with warm water and you’ll have a simple solution. Make sure you use a soft cloth to dry afterwards. A gentle buff with this cloth can bring out some extra shine also.
